Brighton (0-1) dropped its home opener to Fremont, 35-9, on Aug. 17, after lightning forced a second-half delay of about an hour.

The Silverwolves (1-0) were bolstered by Jay Scott’s three touchdowns in the class 6A-5A matchup.

Fremont jumped to an early lead with Hunter Burton’s 40-yard interception return in the first quarter that was followed by a touchdown reception from Chaedon Dayton.

Brighton senior Mike Whittington scored the Bengals’ first and only touchdown of the year on a 60-yard pass from Alex Clifford in the second quarter.

Just as the Bengals were gaining momentum, lightning forced a long delay after halftime. While coaches and admin waited for lightning to move out of the area, fans found shelter in the gymnasium or in their cars and players stayed warm by walking back and forth from the locker room to the training room.

When the game resumed, the offense couldn’t seem to catch the second-half spark it needed for a comeback despite solid runs from junior MJ Cirillo. In the final moments of the game, though, Brighton caught Fremont in the end zone for a safety.

Brighton will visit Layton (0-1), another 6A Region 1 team, on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
